Ratiocination led to an end....

As usual, I am back after ages and with news that most of you might be familiar with.

Next week is my last week at PHILIPS and will be literally unemployed.

So now the big question is, why do I have to mention ratiocination in the title?

That’s an interesting story. It all started off in March 2006 when I thought sedately about my career. Lot of thinking went on deciding, on how to proceed further with respect to my “Management Career”. I started inquiring people on what it takes to bell the CAT, the first time - one of the toughest exams in the country. The usual answer that I got from most of the people was, that they were not able to put all the effort it needed. Thus I came to conclusion that ‘time for preparation’ is what I need to make it. So this went with some meetings with my manager for Loss of pay leaves for some 15 working days. Unfortunately, I did not get it. And this led to my tough decision of leaving one of the leading Consumer electronics and Healthcare industry – Philips.

September 29th is my last day at this place from where I am writing this blog. Hope I make it to one of the B-Schools that I have dreamt off.

P.S: Ratiocination means ‘The process of logical reasoning’

B- Schools, India

Hi,
As most of you know, I am seriously trying for MBA this year. This blog is for the people who are curious to know about the Indian B-Schools. I thought of compiling the information, which I have collected about them.

Many people in India think that IIMs (Indian Institute of Mgmt) are the only top schools in the country. Let me tell, you are being prejudice about this. There are many other places where you can calibrate your mgmt skills. Check the list below for other colleges and related data.

Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (MDI)
http://www.mdi.ac.in/
Avarage salary offered: 9.1 L pa
Highest Domestic Salary: 12.35 L pa
Entrance Exam: CAT

S.P.Jain Institute Of Management & Research ,Mumbai (SPJIMR)
http://www.spjimr.org/
Average salary offered: 8.54 L pa
Highest Domestic Salary: 15.5 L pa
Entrance Exam: CAT/XAT
Check for PGDBM

Indian Institute Of Foreign Trade, Delhi (IIFT)
Another Campus at Kolkota with similar grade.
http://www.iift.edu/
Average salary offered: 8.1 L pa
Highest domestic Salary: 10.66 L pa
Highest International salary: 100,000 US$
Entrance Exam: IIFT spl exam

National Institute Of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai (NITIE)
http://www.nitie.edu/
The data is not available. But have got a good response from one of my friend in the same college. According to him the avarage salary is 8.2 L pa.
Entrance Exam: CAT

Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur (XLRI)
This is supposed to be an elite college. But I dont have any data related to placements, as the corresponding website does not give that info. I would be interested to know if you have any friends studying there. (According to the information I have, the average salary was 8.01 L pa in 2001)
Entrance Exam: XAT

Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi(FMS)
http://www.fms.edu/
Average Salary: 9.91 L pa
Highest Domestic salary: 14.5 L pa
The course offered here is the cheapest when compared to all other institutes in India. But this does not reflect on the facilities given.
Entrance Exam: FMS spl exam

Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai(JBIMS)
http://www.jbims.edu/
Average Salary: 8.25 L pa
Highest Domestic salary: 14.0 L pa
Entrance Exam: MCET(also called MBACET)

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and Delhi(IIT)
Average salary: 7.5 L pa
Highest Domestic Salary: 11 L pa
Entrance Exam: JMET

Symboisis Institute of Business Mangement, Pune(SIMB)
http://sibm.edu/newwebsite/home.htm
Average Salary: 7.2 L pa
Highest Domestic Salary: 9 L pa
Highest International Salary: 85,000 US$
Entrance Exam: SNAP

Narsee Monjee institute of Management Studies, Mumbai(NMIMS)
http://www.nmims.edu/
Average Salary: 7.4 L pa
Highest Domesrtic Salary: 13 L pa
I am not sure about the Entrance exam. Its not mentioned in the website.

Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabhad(IMT)
http://www.imt.edu/
Average Salary: 7.35 L pa
Highest Domestic Salary: 9.25 L pa
Highest International Salary: 85,000US$
Entrance Exam: CAT

Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneshwar(XIMB)
http://www.ximb.ac.in/
Average Salary: 7.15 L pa
Highest Domestic Salary: 8.25 L pa
Highest International Salary: 85,000US$
Entrance Exam: XAT
[Note: The above information is according to the corresponding web sites.]

Hope that gives an impression of the B-Schools. The important thing to be noted is that the Average salary of most of the colleges have increaed every year by nearly 25%(approx). This case also holds for the highest domsetic salary. In some of the places, the highest salary mentioned is very less compared to our expectation. Let me make one thing clear that in most of the cases the average salary is the important criteria, as the highest salary is given only to the best students. So we might not be in that bandwidth(might not be applicable for all). But I would surely like to say at the end that IIMs A, B & C are always the best.

Anyways, I guess this is informative. If you find any mistakes do comment on the same. And I would like to know any other corresponding information.

Thanks
Anoop

My Longest blog till date ...

Hi .. Its really a long time since I wrote a blog. My last one was some where in Nov 05 ..
Anyway past has passed. Lets get on with the future.

As most of you know, I had been to a North India tour last month(June). The trip was awesome, if I have to explain the trip in one scentence, it was a perfect blend of "GOD" & "NATURE".

I had been with my parents and bhaiya bhabhi. We went from Bangalore to Delhi by train. We could not make out the heat till Delhi, as we were in the AC compartment. New Delhi was hot and happening. If you had been to New Delhi in recent past, I am sure you will be keen to check out the City's infrastructure. The roads and the flyovers (close by to 45) makes any one feel that Blore is no where in the competetion. Most of the roads are wide (nearly 3 lanes on each side) and we should be proud to say that it is the "Capital of India". Delhi Metro gives an international touch to the capital.
But even then the Bangalore looks a better place to live with respect to the 3 reasons - Weather, Food and even water to some extent.

Delhi was just the 10% of the whole trip. Then we took a taxi from Delhi, and went to Haridwar, Kedarnath, Badrinath and Nainital(In order). I would like to suggest, not to go to Haridwar as its a place of blunders. Especially if you are half way inclined to atheism, then the place like these might make you more closer.

Then from there we went to Kedarnath. You cannot go till Kedarnath on your vehicle. There we have to go on mules to make our journey easier from Gaurikund to Kedarnath(the distance between them is 14km). The other option is to depend on your legs which costs you tiring 6hrs to reach on the top and 4hrs to come down. But we took 4hrs on the mules just to climb. While coming back, we came by walk - it took 4hrs again.

Then we went to Badrinath the next day and it was a pretty cool drive. Next was the best part of the trip. One of the costliest hill stations in India - Nainital(* According to my observation). We were able to find a thick fog on the lakes of this town during one of the hottest month. There a lot of lakes and lot of places to go for trekking. But I was not able to go for the trekking due to the type of company I had.

Then from there it was back to delhi and then to the so called heaven "Bangalore" ;)
I guess this is my biggest blog till date... Have tried to make it interesting, might have failed. Anyways ...

And check for the photos at the following link:
http://in.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/hemanth_space/album?.dir=/e957scd&.src=ph&.tok=ph_nKMFBudtJ8NHS
[Skimming is a better way to do as there are too many photos- 211]

Keep in touch,
Anoop
The 90/10 Principle - fwd, Good.

Have you read this before? Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will
change your life (at least the way you react to situations). What is this
principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is
decided by how you react. What does this mean? We really have no control
over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down.
The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A
driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The
other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.

How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light., but you can
control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you
react.

Let's use an example. You are eating breakfast with your family. Your
daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You haveno
control over what just what happened. What happens when the next will be
determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for
knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you
turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the
edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and
change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy
crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus.
Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive
your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in
a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine
away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without
saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you
forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it
seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home, When you
arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and
daughter.

Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?

The answer is D. You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How
you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day. Here is what
could have and should have happened. Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter
is about to cry. You gently say, "It's ok honey, you just need,to be more
careful next time". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new
shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the
window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive
5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how
good the day you are having.

Notice the difference? Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both
ended different. Why? Because of how you REACTED. You really do not have any
control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your
reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle.

If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge. Let the
attack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the negative
comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong
reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out
etc.

Birth Test

Example March 20, 1950
3 + 20 + 1950 = 1973
1 + 9 + 7 + 3 = 20
2 + 0 = 2 keep going until you end up with a single digit number. 2 is
the Birth Number to read for the birth date in the example.

#1 THE ORIGINATOR
#2 THE PEACEMAKER
#3 THE LIFE OF THE PARTY
#4 THE CONSERVATIVE
#5 THE NONCONFORMIST
#6 THE ROMANTIC
#7 THE INTELLECTUAL
#8 THE BIG SHOT
#9 THE PERFORMER
===========================================================

# 1 - THE ORIGINATOR
1 's are originals. They take charge of people. They view people objectively.
They let you know in no uncertain terms that they are the boss. They
should
learn to exude their decisions on their own needs rather than on what
others
want.
DEBATE on this...

Is India getting spoiled by IT industry or getting better.

[Not related to previous update of mine]

Different statements that I came accross.

IT is increasing the economical differences in the society.

IT is killing the basic sciences and other engg groups in India especially. As the software engg , other engg and other workers are paid equally in other countries Ex: US.

This is resulting in devaluation of the rupee. In other words mean, the value of rupee is gone decrease more like japanese currency [100 yen = 42 Rs (just an example)].

IT is spoiling the infrastructure of the cities.

Will result in lack of teachers, doctors, and other engineers in the future.

Waiting for the comments.

"FWD" - very long , but read it .

Vivek Pradhan wasn't a happy man. Even the plush comfort of the First Class air-conditioned compartment of the Shatabdi Express couldn't cool his frayed nerves. He was the Project Manager and entitled to air travel. It was not the prestige he sought, he had tried to reason with the admin guy, it was the savings in time. A PM had so many things to do!

He opened his case and took out the laptop, determined to put the time to some good use.

"Are you from the software industry sir," the man beside him was staring appreciatively at the laptop.
Vivek glanced briefly and mumbled in affirmation, handling the laptop now with exaggerated care and importance as if it were an expensive car.

"You people have brought so much advancement to the country sir. Today everything is getting computerized."
'Thanks," smiled Vivek, turning around to give the man a detailed look. He always found it difficult to resist appreciation. The man was young and stocky like a sportsman. He looked simple and strangely out of place in that little lap of luxury like a small town boy in a prep school. He probably was a Railway sportsman making the most of his free traveling pass.

"You people always amaze me," the man continued, "You sit in an office and write something on a computer and it does so many big things outside."

Vivek smiled deprecatingly. Naivety demanded reasoning not anger. "It is not as simple as that my friend. It is not just a question of writing a few lines. There is a lot of process that goes behind it." For a moment he was tempted to explain the entire Software Development Lifecycle but restrained himself to a single statement. "It is complex, very complex."
"It has to be. No wonder you people are so highly paid," came the reply.

This was not turning out as Vivek had thought. A hint of belligerence came into his so far affable, persuasive tone.

"Everyone just sees the money. No one sees the amount of hard work we have to put in." "Hard work!" "Indians have such a narrow concept of hard work.
Just because we sit in an air-conditioned office doesn't mean our brows don't sweat. You exercise the muscle; we exercise the mind and believe me that is no less taxing."

He had the man where he wanted him and it was time to drive home the point.

"Let me give you an example. Take this train. The entire railway reservation system is computerized. You can book a train ticket between any two stations from any of the hundreds of computerized booking centers across the country.
Thousands of transactions accessing a single database at a given time; concurrency, data integrity, locking, data security. Do you understand the complexity in designing and coding such a system?"
The man was stuck with amazement, like a child at a planetarium. This was something big and beyond his imagination.
"You design and code such things."

"I used to," Vivek paused for effect, "But now I am the project manager,"

"Oh!" sighed the man, as if the storm had passed over, "so your life is easy now."

It was like being told the fire was better than the frying pan. The man had to be given a feel of the heat.
"Oh come on, does life ever get easy as you go up the ladder. Responsibility only brings more work. Design and coding! That is the easier part. Now I don't do it, but I am responsible for it and believe me, that is far more stressful. My job is to get the work done in time and with the highest quality. And to tell you about the pressures! There is the customer at one end always changing his requirements, the user wanting something else and your boss always expecting you to have finished it yesterday."

Vivek paused in his diatribe, his belligerence fading with self-realization.
What he had said was not merely the outburst of a wronged man, it was the truth. And one need not get angry while defending the truth. "My friend," he concluded triumphantly, "you don't know what it is to be in the line of fire."

The man sat back in his chair, his eyes closed as if in realization. When he spoke after sometime, it was with a calm certainty that surprised Vivek. "I know sir, I know what it is to be in the line of fire," He was staring blankly as if no passenger, no train existed, just a vast expanse of time.

"There were 30 of us when we were ordered to capture Point 4875 in the cover of the night. The enemy was firing from the top. There was no knowing where the next bullet was going to come from and for whom. In the morning when we finally hoisted the tricolor at the top only 4 of us were alive."

"You are a..."

"I am Subedar Sushant Singh from the 13 J&K Rifles on duty at Peak 4875 in Kargil. They tell me I have completed my term and can opt for a land assignment. But tell me sir, can one give up duty just because it makes life easier. On the dawn of that capture one of my colleagues lay injured in the snow, open to enemy fire while we were hiding behind a bunker. It was my job to go and fetch that soldier to safety. But my captain refused me permission and went ahead himself. He said that the first pledge he had taken as a Gentleman Cadet was to put the safety and welfare of the nation foremost followed by the safety and welfare of the men he commanded. His own personal safety came last, always and every time. He was killed as he shielded that soldier into the bunker. Every morning now as I stand guard I can see him taking all those bullets, which were actually meant for me. I know sir, I know what it is to be in the line of fire."

Vivek looked at him in disbelief not sure of his reply. Abruptly he switched off the laptop. It seemed trivial, even insulting to edit a word document in the presence of a man for whom valor and duty was a daily part of life; a valor and sense of duty which he had so far attributed only to epical heroes.
The train slowed down as it pulled into the station and Subedar Sushant Singh picked up his bags to alight.
"It was nice meeting you sir."

Vivek fumbled with the handshake. This was the hand that had climbed mountains, pressed the trigger and hoisted the tricolor. Suddenly as if by impulse he stood at attention, and his right hand went up in an impromptu salute.
It was the least he felt he could do for the country.

PS: The incident he narrates during the capture of Peak 4875 is a true life incident during the Kargil war. Major Vikram Batra sacrificed his life while trying to save one of the men he commanded, as victory was within sight. For this and his various other acts of bravery he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra - the nation's highest military award.

It's half past 8 in the office

but the lights are still on..
PCs still running,
coffee machines still buzzing...
and who's at work?
Most of them?? Take a closer look..
All or most specimens are 20-something male species of
the human race...
Look closer... again all or most of them are bachelors...

and why are they sitting late? Working hard? No way!!
Any guesses??
Let's ask one of them...
Here's what he says... "What's there 2 do after going
home... here we get to surf, AC, phone, food,
coffee.. thats is why I am working late...
importantly no bossssssss!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the scene in most research centres and software companies
and other off-shore offices.
Bachelors "time-passing" during late hours in the
office just bcoz they say they've nothing else to do...
Now what r the consequences... read on...
* "Working"(for the record only) late hours soon
becomes part of the institute or company culture.
* With bosses more than eager to provide support to
those "working" late in the form of taxi vouchers, food vouchers and
of course good feedback,(oh, he's a hard worker... goes home only to
change..!!).They aren't helping things too... To hell with bosses who
don't understand the difference between "sitting" late and "working"
late!!
* Very soon, the boss start expecting all
employees to put in extra working hours.

So, My dear Bachelors let me tell you, life changes
when u get married and start having a family... office is no longer a
priority, family is... and that's when the problem starts... becoz u
start having commitments at home too.
For your boss, the earlier "hardworking" guy
suddenly seems to become a "early leaver" even if u leave an hour
after regulartime... after doing the same amount of work.
People leaving on time after doing their tasks for
the day are labeled as work-shirkers...
Girls who thankfully always (its changing
nowadays... though) leave on time are labeled as "not up to it". All
the while, the bachelors pat their own backs and carry on "working"
not realizing that they r spoiling the work culture at their own place
and never realize that they wuld have to regret at one point of time.
*So what's the moral of the story?? *
* Very clear, LEAVE ON TIME!!
* Never put in extra time " *unless really needed *"
Don't stay back un-necessarily and spoil your
company work culture which
will in turn cause inconvenience to you and your
colleagues. There are hundred other things to do in the evening..
Learn music..
Learn a foreign language...
try a sport... TT, cricket.........
importantly
Get a girl friend, take her around town.
* And for heaven's sake net cafe rates have dropped
to an all-time low
(plus, no fire-walls) and try cooking for a change.
Take a tip from the Smirnoff ad: *"Life's calling,
where are you??"*

Pressure building up

I was assigned to a part of a project and was given some change requests(CR) of that, a month ago. Now after a month I have solved one CR out of 5 and need to buck up as the dealine is on sept 30th ..The pressure is building but I am not slogging still, moreover I am trying to be busy. And that hasn't effected my time of leaving in the evenings. I leave between 5:30 and 6 as usual.
My project manager told in the meeting yesterday that I am lagging. And she disclosed the deadline.
But its all part of the corporate life.

We had great entry to the new campus here at hebbal. Actually we had organised some games like treasure hunt, princes call , and many others .. Even our CEO Bob and the PMS Blore head Bhaskaran and all the other heads and the employees were part of the all games. Actually that showed the simplicity of our heads.

I was feeling bored after the heavy lunch , so thought of updating the blog ...
Thats it for now ..

Anoop

HUTCH service sounds good when they start off. But finally you come to know the loop holes.
They gave me a number which I was interseted in and moreover I was happy with. The documents required by them is not been declared properly and they ask one by one later. This took me 2 days. And then, the documents are misplaced and my no is been released for others. Mean time the no which I had selected is given to someone else. They spent 3 days for the same. Finally, ask me to select a new no. And after a lot of discussion ...........
And arguments ....
I selected this no.
9886300508

It was activated finally yesterday. So was not reachable because of that...
due to that I was not able to attend the Re-union ... Deepti's Birthday treat .

Any ways will make another get-together ....
